Sonnet for Jess

Simon Mermelstein

 (upon reading a blind submission)

I recognize her work without the name—
the Japanese geography, her voice
is unmistakable. She is the same
but far     so different since she made the choice

to do it even though she wasn’t sure.
To start anew. Afresh. Away from here.
And things are going perfectly for her—
Her love has made her troubles disappear.

Now is future. You can run away.
Learn the language. Find a gal or guy.
Cross the sea and find a place to stay.
Every single workday airplanes fly

from here to there. I’m in my chair, but she?
She did it, and I wish the same for me.
