My Hero and Other Follies

Adrienne Waterston

Inspiration for the artwork:

The inspiration for all of the following pieces is the notes I take while working over the phone. I love the way an envelope or piece of scrap paper looks after I have been working, the way I fill it in with words and doodles and I wanted to take these small journeys through the projects and beyond and make something more of them, like a visual diary, reflecting the way my brain taps into the present and the past.

As a graphic designer, I often work remotely and frequently need to consult clients about projects over the phone. Invariably as I am talking about projects, I am writing down, things I think I should remember about my conversations, making lists of things to do, etc. As I am talking, though, other words and images seem to work their way in. My brain wanders, while still actively engaged with the person I am talking too, all around the edges of my consciousness and into my subconscious. I find myself drawing both related and unrelated images and words as my brain travels sideways through the highways and byways of my brain, merging my conversation with those of my past experiences and observations, books I have read, news and events, games my kids are playing.

I created large silkscreens and used the medium to layer elements from my notes and assorted projects to transform them into a visual representation of the complex, dreamlike journeys my mind makes when I working on the phone.
